Types of Courses
Dr. Koerner presents oral surgery courses to sponsoring organizations in the following formats:
- Half-day or one full-day didactic courses. Lecture only.
- One full-day course with hands-on model participation. In a course such as this, the workshop portion can either be presented during two hours at the end of the day or it can be interspersed throughout the day (preferred) depending on the facilities. The workshop includes drilling on life-like dentoform models. Drilling capability is from:
- Electric bench engines provided by 1) the sponsoring organization, or 2) a company, such as Brasseler, Kerr, Medidenta, etc.
- Or, from using Dr. Koerner’s handpiece hook-ups (plastic tubing with foot rheostats) that can be connected to a nitrogen K-tank that the sponsoring organization rents locally on the day of the course. There is a $200 fee for using the hook-ups (plus shipping).
- Or, from using a dental school laboratory used by dental students. In this case, it is usually didactic on Friday and workshop on Saturday when the facility is not in use by the dental students.
The models are purchased by the sponsoring organization from Bryant Dental Lab in St. George, Utah for a cost of about $75 each.
Doctors (participants) either bring their own surgery instruments or sets can be provided by Dr. Koerner. These were contributed for this purpose by the Karl Schumacher Company.

- Two-day course with hands-on model participation. This is commonly requested by AGD Mastership Tracts. It is also the format used by Dr. Gordon Christensen’s Practical Clinical Courses and the Scottsdale Dental Center for Dental Education.
- Four-day patient-participation course (two separate two-day sessions). The first session utilizes models, the second session involves patient treatment on the second day.
