Karl R. Koerner, BS, DDS, MS

Dr. Koerner is past president of the Utah Dental Association and a former delegate to the ADA House. He has served as Utah Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) president and received their award of “Dentist of the Year”. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Pierre Fouchard Academy, Alpha Kappa Upsilon, SCADA, International College of Dentistry, and the Academy of Dentistry International. He has earned his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. His degrees are from Utah State University (BS, 1969 and MS ed., 1992) and the University of Washington (DDS, 1973). He completed a General Practice Residency in the U.S. Army in 1974 at Brooke Army Medical Center and subsequently served in the U.S. Army for two years. He is licensed in Utah to administer IV sedation and licensed to practice dentistry in Utah, Idaho, and California. From 1976 to 1995 he practiced general dentistry in Logan, Utah. He now has a general practice in the Salt Lake City, Utah area in which he does only oral surgery.

Dr. Koerner has been teaching clinical courses on oral surgery to other dentists in the U.S. and abroad since 1981. They have involved didactic presentations and model and/or patient participation. Some of the 700+ meetings at which he has spoken include the American Dental Association Annual Session, Hinman, Greater New York, Chicago Mid-Winter, Greater Houston, Mid-Continental, national Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), Gordon Christensen’s Practical Clinical Courses, and many state dental associations and AGD meetings.

He has produced books, video tape presentations, and articles on various aspects of surgery. He has co-authored the books Color Atlas of Minor Oral Surgery, 2nd ed. (Mosby) which includes over 700 color pictures on surgery for the general dentist and Clinical Procedures for Third Molar Surgery, 2nd ed. (PennWell). He is editor and contributor to a Dental Clinics of North America (Saunders) volume on basic oral surgery and co-editor with Dr. Pat Allen on a Dental Clinics volume on periodontal surgery. His most recent book (editor and contributor) is Manual of Minor Oral Surgery for the General Dentist (Blackwell Publishing – 2006). The Video Journal of Dentistry (AGD) has produced two of his video programs — on exodontia and third molar surgery. In 2006, Dr. Gordon Christensen featured him in three DVDs – on exodontia, third molar surgery, and medical emergencies. He has done live surgery at the Greater New York and Chicago MidWinter meetings that have been made available on video tape.

He has had articles published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, Journal of Public Health Dentistry and other periodicals such as Dentistry Today, Dental Economics, and the Journal of the Chicago Dental Society. Past articles in Dentistry Today covered maxillary third molar surgery, mandibular third molar surgery, surgical crown lengthening, apicoectomies, exodontia, implants, aesthetic bone grafts in extraction sites, oral sedation, oral cancer, managing bleeding during oral surgery, and preventing emergencies with local anesthetic.

In 1995, Dr. Koerner and his family moved to Taiwan for three years to serve as Christian missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One reason for this assignment is that he speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. Upon returning in 1998, he established a new general practice in the Salt Lake City area where he performs only oral surgery including implants. He frequently provides humanitarian dental service, most recently for orphans and the elderly in China. Other trips have been to Honduras, Brazil, Mexico, and India. From 2002 to the end of 2005, he co-taught the “Update” courses in the U. S., Canada, and Europe for Clinical Research Associates in Provo, Utah and currently serves on their Board of Directors. He is Head of the Oral Surgery Department at the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry.
